“America’s Oldest Continuing Summer Chamber Music Festival”

(Falls Village, CT) Celebrate the end of summer at Music Mountain as they conclude their 2011 season with the award-winning Shanghai String Quartet, performing an all Beethoven program on Saturday, September 3rd (6:30pm) and what promises to be one of this summer’s singular musical highlights --- a Schubert and Franck themed Summer’s End benefit concert on Sunday, September 4th (3PM) featuring the Shanghai Quartet along with special guest artist Van Cliburn Gold Medalist - Haochen Zhang.  Mr. Zhang is the first Van Cliburn Gold Medalist to appear at Music Mountain, a fitting way to celebrate the conclusion of the 82nd season! These final concerts mark another record-breaking number of music lovers who attended chamber, jazz and country concerts this summer at Gordon Hall in Falls Village

For over 25 years, the The Shanghai String Quartet has melded the elegance of the classical string quartet style with the performance of some of the most challenging works in the entire repertory.  On Saturday, September 3rd, the evening concert will feature three Beethoven masterworks: the String Quartet in D Major Opus 18 # 3; the String Quartet in F Major, Opus 18 # 1; and the String Quartet in C Major, Opus 59 # 3 (a work first played at Music Mountain's very first concert on August 22, 1930 by Music Mountain’s founding group, the Gordon String Quartet.) The Shanghai Quartet regularly tours the great music centers of North and South America, Asia, and Europe. They appear frequently at New York's Carnegie Hall and their travels have taken them to London, Vienna, Prague and  Australia's Sydney Opera House.

On Sunday, September 4th The Shanghai String Quartet will return to the stage along with Haochen Zhang as part of Music Mountain’s Summer’s End Special Benefit concert featuring two sublime works: the Schubert String Quartet in D Minor, D. 810 -“Death and the Maiden” and the Franck: Piano Quintet in F Minor. At the age of five, Zhang gave his debut recital at the Shanghai Music Hall and in June 2009, he became the youngest and the first Chinese competitor to be awarded the prestigious Gold Medal at the Thirteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. He tours regularly around the country and abroad. This special Sunday afternoon concert promises to be a spectacular day of music.

Located in Falls Village, Connecticut, Music Mountain is located on Music Mountain Road, where a short scenic drive will bring music lovers to Gordon Hall with ample & free parking. Beer and wine are available and, as is the Music Mountain custom, audience members are invited to picnic before the concerts on the scenic grounds.

All tickets for the mid-summer special benefit on Sunday, September 4th (3PM) are priced at $75. Ticket prices for the September 3rd concert $30 at the door, $27 in advance. (Admission is FREE for those 18 and under.)  Discounts apply through participating organizations. For a complete summer schedule, special ticket prices, and to download a ticket order form visit www.musicmountain.org or call 860-824-7126.
